Kitchen utensils and types of material

When we are going to cook, it is essential to have the right material. And in this sense, we should not only look at pans and casseroles, but also at kitchen utensils.

From this website, and in numerous reviews, we usually remember the importance of not using metal utensils to cook with pans. So what alternatives do we have? Let’s see the differences of each material:

WOODEN KITCHEN UTENSILS

These have been used by humans for a few thousand years, and we are still here, so we have not been so bad, right?

Depending on the type of wood, they can be very durable and resistant utensils , with the advantage that they will not damage our pans when we handle the food directly on their surface.

What can be the drawback of these wooden utensils? Well, that certain woods when they have a lot of use, being a porous surface, can filter food liquids through their pores with the consequent battery risk. For this, it is best to opt for quality wooden utensils. And we emphasize this because there are woods that are not very suitable for food use.

Keep in mind that the wood depending on its origin can be more or less porous, and that is very harmful when we talk about food. Therefore, it is important to choose the material well. Consequently, from here we recommend bamboo utensils, very resistant.

Bamboo wood has been in kitchens around the world for many years and has gained an impeccable reputation for its easy cleaning and resistance.

In short: wood is a perfect and healthy material , as long as you select a good raw material. And bamboo is.

SILICONE KITCHEN UTENSILS

Without a doubt the best. Silicone is a stable material even at high temperatures, which ensures that there will be no transfer of substances or flavors even at 230º. These silicones for food use are the result of innovation with different materials to achieve safe utensils. Consequently, we can ensure that its compounds do not affect our food at all. They are BPA-free and extremely resistant utensils. And BRA AIR utensils are one of the best examples of quality and innovative design.

Thus, the materials used are specially manufactured for this and do not deform or damage even if we mistreat them. In addition, we can put them in the dishwasher without any fear.

Finally, the only downside that we can put to these silicone utensils is their flexibility. In certain items, their rubbery surface bends when you force yourself to lift something heavy. Consequently, they become cumbersome and impractical. This can happen, for example, if you try to lift a very heavy cake with a low-quality silicone utensil.

The solution, however, are those that are composed of a resistant “heart” and a quality silicone. For example, one option is those utensils made of silicone in the part that comes into contact with food, and stainless steel the rest. Stainless steel ensures strength, consistency and durability. For its part, the silicone end gives it safety for the pans, while supporting extreme temperatures. But this option has the downside that the joints and joints of both materials can store waste and deteriorate if it is not of good quality.

For this reason, we believe that the best option is undoubtedly silicone kitchen utensils but of quality. Those that have a silicone end capable of withstanding very high temperatures and their handle is made of clean, easy-to-wash and resistant plastic.

From this website we recommend a set of utensils like these. Made of highly resistant and hard plastic, the part that comes into contact with food and fire is made of silicone, withstanding 230º of temperature without any problem . Of all those analyzed, our favorites are these.

STAINLESS STEEL KITCHEN UTENSILS

Although it is true that stainless steel utensils are almost eternal, we must bear in mind that their simple contact with any of our pans will make them throw away. The non-stick surfaces are very easily damaged if we try to move that omelette with a metal spatula. However, they can be good options to use in the oven, or with iron  or stainless steel pans.

Of course, they are the most resistant utensils. In addition, they can be put in the dishwasher, used to “scratch” the oven tray … And there is no doubt that stainless steel is an excellent material for the kitchen. Its surface is not porous, and consequently, it does not “store” any residue as certain woods can. In addition, it can be introduced into the boiling oil and nothing will happen.

In short, stainless steel utensils are timeless, safe and healthy. However, misusing it on a nonstick skillet can spoil it. If your pans are made of iron, fearless!

OUR OPINION

As we have seen, there are basically three types of kitchen utensil materials: stainless steel, wood and silicone. After testing and analyzing all, these are our conclusions:

  • The stainless steel ones are very hard and resistant, but we advise against them for a simple reason. Most of us use non-stick pans or pots, and metal utensils end up damaging this surface very easily.
  • We like wooden utensils better. They are more respectful of non-stick surfaces and hardly damage them. The only downside we see is that its surface (depending on the wood) can be more porous and absorb odors, salty and in the worst case, bacteria. If we have wooden utensils we have to be very scrupulous with cleaning.
  • Lastly, silicone utensils are our favorites. They are super resistant as they withstand torsion and the material does not deteriorate. Its material is the most suitable for use with non-stick pans as they do not damage it. The surface is non-porous, so it does not absorb odors, flavors or food residues that could be a breeding ground for bacteria. And finally, it is the most recommended for our health, as it supports extremely high temperatures. It is a very solid material that does not give off any type of residue. Our favorite utensils, therefore, are cheap silicone ones in the style of the BRA Air that we analyzed back in the day.
